New Year. New Rules. Pick one night a month or better yet one night a week to turn off the television and devote the evening to family game night. Not only will playing games teach your children critical thinking skills, gamesmanship, and competitiveness tempered with good sportsmanship, it will be an enforced bonding time and create wonderful family memories. To make the night stand out from every other night, consider creating customizable family game night essentials that you take out for every time you and your family gather around the kitchen table. This will add a repetitive visual that will reinforce the memory. Another idea is to also add a common taste and smell to each night – i.e. always serve hot chocolate in your game night mugs or serve your family’s special oatmeal cookie recipe on a game night plate. And of course, if you want to go all out, consider wearing game night shirts. Our friends over at Party Idea Pros have put together a fun post devoted to Board Game Theme Party Planning, Ideas & Supplies and they even have a post devoted to over the top game night props and decorations if you want to take the whole concept to the next level.

Our family recently gathered from near and far and incorporated a lip synch battle inspired by Jimmy Fallon’s battles with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Stephen Merchant featured above as well as his original battle with John Krasinski. #toofunny
